How do bones break?
According to the Cleveland Clinic, a fracture is a medical term for a broken bone. Bone fractures are different and more severe than bone bruises and bone sprains. Fractures are categorized in several different ways. Here are some ways fracture types are grouped.
Pattern fractures
This type of fracture is based on the shape of the break. Fractures with a single-line break are further categorized as oblique, transverse, or longitudinal fractures. Fractures that don’t break in a straight line include greenstick, comminuted, segmental, and spiral fractures.
The cause
These fractures include stress (hairline), avulsion, and buckle fractures.
Body part
The part of your body such as your hand, wrist, or foot. Examples include:
- Clavicle fractures (broken collarbones)
- Shoulder fractures
- Humerus fractures (upper arm)
- Elbow fractures
- Rib fractures
- Facial fractures
- Compression fractures
- Pelvic fractures
- Hip fractures
- Femur fractures
- Patella fractures
- Growth plate fractures
- Tibia fractures (shin bone)
- Fibula (calf bone)
Fractures of the feet and ankles include calcaneal stress fractures, fifth metatarsal fractures, Jones fractures, and other types of fractures.
Open vs. closed fractures
In an open fracture, your bone breaks through the skin. Open fractures may be called compound fractures. Open fractures normally take more time to heal and have an increased risk of infections and other complications. With closed fractures, the bone doesn’t penetrate the skin.
Displaced vs. non displaced fractures
A displaced fracture occurs when the broken bone fragments shift significantly, creating a gap at the break site. In contrast, a non-displaced fracture means the bone is broken but the pieces remain in proper alignment. Displaced fractures often need surgical intervention for proper healing.
What are the signs you have a broken bone?
Some of the signs that you broke a bone include pain, tenderness, swelling, bruising, the inability to move that part of the body, and a bump/deformity that isn’t normally apparent.
How are broken bones diagnosed in Tampa?
After conducting a physical exam, your doctor or ER care team will likely order X-rays, MRIs, and/or CT scans to determine where the break is and the type of break. The MRI will also show how the cartilage and ligaments are affected. Another diagnostic test for fractures is a bone scan that can find fractures that don’t show up on an X-ray.
Imaging tests are normally taken after an injury victim has been stabilized.
What are the treatments for broken bones in Tampa?
At MattLaw, we review with your doctors what treatments are necessary to repair your broken bones. The treatments vary depending on the type of break and other factors. Possible treatments for a fracture include:
- This is done through the use of a splint or a cast. Splints are normally used for three to five weeks. Casts are normally used for six to eight weeks.
- Closed reduction. Severe breaks require a closed reduction to realign your bones. This is a non-surgical procedure. Your healthcare professional will “physically push and pull your body on the outside to line up your broken bones inside you.” The medical team will normally use a local anesthetic, sedatives to relax your whole body, and or general anesthesia. You’ll use a splint or a cast after a closed reduction.
- Bone fracture surgery. There are different techniques if your fracture requires surgery. These methods include:
- Internal fixation. This treatment involves realigning your bones and inserting “pieces of metal into your bone to hold it in place while it heals.” You’ll need to limit how much you use that part of your body to make sure your bone can fully heal. Internal fixation techniques include rods, plates and screws, and pins and wires.
- External fixation. With this treatment, the surgeon inserts screws into the bone on both sides of the fracture inside your body and attaches them to an external brace or bracket around the bone. This method can temporarily stabilize the fracture and allow initial healing before performing an internal fixation procedure.
- This procedure may be used if you fracture a joint such as your knee, shoulder, or elbow.
- Bone grafting. This procedure is used if your bone break “is severely displaced or if your bone isn’t healing back together as well as it should.”
Another procedure is an artificial replacement piece.
Fracture surgery complications include bone infections, acute compartment syndrome (ACS), malunion (your broken bones don’t line up correctly while they heal), and nonunion (your bones don’t grow back fully or at all).
NSAIDs may help though there are concerns that you should review with your doctor.
